A look back at the inception of the QWIXOTIC Webcomic…

Well… it’s been a while since we’ve done any sort of self-reflection on this Blog. With the QWIXOTIC Webcomic launch in January 2012… I think it’s time for a little talk. ( No, I’m not breaking up with you. )

When Gui and I started talking about doing a comic book, we were very unaware of the Industry. Sure we read the graphic novels, kept up with what’s going on with the whole DC Vs. Marvel thing, not to mention the awesome creator-owned titles that are all the rage now. However, we didn’t know how difficult it was to ‘break into the industry’. We had a lot of preconceived misunderstanding of how things work. In our, almost child-like thought process, we figured that if we came up with a good enough story, wrote a good enough script, submitted it to enough of the ‘Big’ publishers… then boom! We’re comic writers!! Unfortunately… that’s really NOT good enough.

Obviously it takes a helluva lot more than that, as we realized. It’s been almost 5 years since, and we’ve transformed from being eager with the bright eyes, to  having more of a wise and realistic squint. The ideas have evolved, our mindset has changed and even the format itself has been reinvented. Self publishing a print comic book is expensive folks. Especially for guys who aren’t doing this for a living… yea we’ve got day jobs. We’re like Day Jobbers by day, and Comic Writers by night! Almost like Superheroes! But realistically, majority of everyone trying to or actually having a comic story out there does the same.

We’re all here to follow a passion, tell a story, follow our dreams and all that good stuff. No one decides to write comics for the big bucks (If you have big bucks you’re willing to invest… please contact me ) but more for the fulfilment of their own artistic creativity and urges. Yes, we get urges. I’ve said too much…

Eventually we found an amazing artist, in the form of Vince Sunico from Spent Pencils. Vince is awesome, simply put. His enlistment was able to chug our project along slowly, but steadily. We’ve gone almost 5 years now from discussing QWIXOTIC during smoke breaks at a job we hated (those breaks lasted hours sometimes) to seeing pencils of pages being completed, approving panel changes for further issues and designing character sketches. In the next few weeks, it’ll be marketing, website launch and finally… after YEARS of siezuring out ideas and concepts… we get to see QWIXOTIC revealed to the masses.

This Blog was created with the thought that we will share every progress of the QWIXOTIC Webcomic in stages for the public. We posted every significant and insignificant thing we did, or planned to do on this Blog, in the hopes that how far we’ve come since inception to launch… might be helpful to others toying with the idea of making a comic book themselves. I don’t know how successful we’ve been, however it was a great ride.

Well that sounded climactic. However we’ve actually just begun. Over the next month, we will be finalizing the website. Completing more issues by some amazing guest artists from the Spent Pencils crew. Not to mention… finally, the official launch and release of Issue # 1 of the QWIXOTIC Webcomic! *squeal*

I’m not going to thank everyone that’s been here through out, or name names of people who have supported us during all the craziness. It just seems a li’l generic for us. But you know how you are. If not, then you’re shit outta luck. I joke, you know I love you all. *mad hugs*

I shall be out of the country for 10 days or so, on unrelated business that has nothing to do with me moonlighting as a Superhero… at all. Come back to the blog next week to get the other perspective of our journey from my often missed, and the actual writer by nature in our two man Co-Creator duo, Guillermo Girolmini himself.

In the mean time, leave your comments, thoughts, ideas and anything else your heart desires below. Do it now!

Just like the pros…

Delays plague the professional comics industry. Series planned for months stretch into years. Monthly issues became an issue every 3-4 months. Some titles debuted years ago, are still awaiting the next issue in the series.

Recently Gui and I met with artist extraordinaire Vince Sunico. And I’m proud to say that the pencils for Page 1 of Issue 1 of the QWIXOTIC Webcomic are complete. It took a while to process for me, that the images on the page were what we had written months ago. The panel to panel descriptions, shots, angles, transitions… all brought to life from our texts, to  images from by Vince. Makes you appreciate the process. The pencils will be on the blog shortly.

During that meet, the three of us also had to re-assess our situation and the way we had approached the release and premiere. Given the delays, the QWIXOTIC Webcomic Series will now debut in early 2012. Now this is not another delay for the sake of delay. Things are still progressing with QWIXOTIC at break-neck speed, however, for everyone to get the full effect of QWIXOTIC, it’s best for a proper debut, not a shoddy one.

We’ve been super anxious to get this out to everyone and have our 4+ year creation come to fruition. However, reluctantly, we decided that our eagerness shouldn’t take priority over the quality of the release. A proper site, proper marketing, etc all play a huge part in the success of QWIXOTIC, or any creative venture to be fair. In the next coming weeks and months, there will be a lot of updates on the Blog. Marketing prints, logo, storyboards, pencils, and other awesome nonsense that only we can provide. Along with it, there should be some QWIXOTIC presence in the Cons and events going on through out the GTA in the next few months.

If delays are part of the professional comics industry, then QWIXOTIC is well on it’s way to being a very professionally created comic series… we hope.

In Canada, on Canada Day… coincidence??

Hey all, sorry for the few missed weeks. Been busy wrapping a lot of things up and not to mention travelling. Back in Canada after a 6 month absence. Damn the weather is nice. Happy Canada Day to all!!

Just a quick update on all things QWIXOTIC. We will be meeting with the Vince Sunico in the next few days, to get some progress reports along with a game plan for the next few weeks. Website is being worked on by a very creative designer. Updates on that as it comes…

Till then I’m going to enjoy my time in Canada, team up with my co-writer of the QWIXOTIC Webcomic, Gui, and brainstorm some more awesome-ness that will culminate in visual story form in the next few months for your reading pleasure. We’re going to try to stick to the schedule release date of the summer for everyone… as hard as it might be… cross your collective fingers!

Shah out!

A physical political flash of Qwixotism

Qwixotic for the masses…

Having said that, I need you to know that the underlying message to [ultimately] the QWIXOTIC graphic novel, is one that we hope you will envision and interpret in your own way, begining with the WEBCOMIC. All of your interpretations, your comments, become multiple bits of exposure, putting Qwynn and her world closer to more readers…and more awareness. Part of the journey thus far, and to come…

Could I be getting ahead of myself by saying Graphic Novel? It’s a strong possibility…but its also part of the master plan aptly titled QWIXOTIC…

So…
Since Life seems to have given me reprieve today, let’s not spend our limited time together defining the stumbling blocks that lead to wicked banter and other exchanges of light, playful, teasing remarks and call for warp factor 9!

As we look forward to WEBCOMIC launch, be prepared for the graphic nature of our story, because Qwixotic is in part, a culmination of repeated diatribes and finger pointing against politicians and their cohorts. Individuals who invoke the defense of free institutions to create profit; using it as a blinding veil to cast a web of dream-like deceit. Qwixotic is all of us spellbound… then awakening from decades of slumber and ignorant sweat…like a mini movie on paper. If you happen to say “WHAT?!?” After reading it…that’s a great place to start 😉

Ya, pulled a heavy on ya…lol.

We hope what you will soon see, and read about, speaks for itself in every known language, at the same time to you.

Let me rest… but only ’till I publish this post…

I return weary and wide eyed from the turmoils that is life. That’s about the only eloquence I can muster for this post. It’s been an exhaustive few weeks. QWIXOTIC is one of many things that is being done and I’m a little excited to the say that website designs are progressing further than they have in these last few weeks. I’ll be honest, I was a little worried, however I have faith in the direction we are going now. (huh, that says a lot about my religious sentimentality don’t it?)

Got an update for Vince that he should definitely have something for us soon enough. So will keep pestering him ’till then. On behalf of the QWIXOTICANS of course. By the way: Is it presumptuous to name the possible future fans of our yet un released web comic considering I’m the co-writer / creator of said web comic and therefore am very biased? Huh. Maybe if I wasn’t so drained I’d take an shaky stab at trying to answer that… but I am, so I won’t.

In the following weeks expect some news about website design progress, maybe some storyboards from Issue #1 and more musings from myself, The Shah. Maybe an appearance (via post form) of co-creator Gui himself, regaling us with his thoughtful insights into the journey so far… and to come.

Excitement is in the air…!

Whew! That was a hectic few weeks of visual appetizers from us before the official launch of our web comic. I say we take a breather shall we? I feel like we haven’t talked in forever.

So… how are you? Me? I’m good… barring some migraines here and there, otherwise all good.

I just realized how one sided this relationship is. *sigh. I guess I’ll do all the talking, as always…

Well we’re approaching summer time, which, I’ve promised you all as being the time of launch for our QWIXOTIC Web Comic. During these next few months we’ll be finalizing website designs, logos… while as of right now (like… right this second!!) I know Vince Sunico of Spent Pencils fame is hard at work, doing all the artwork for QWIXOTIC’s Issue #1. Well, right this second he’s most likely asleep as it’s well into the night…but you’re picking up what I’m putting down yea?

In the next few weeks you should see some worthy updates, but know that since I will be busy putting it all together, like a ringmaster brushing all the lions’ manes before a performance (I’m assuming they do that, or maybe a fluffer…?) I might not have the time to put together these eloquent Blog posts as you crave weekly. (again, I assume you crave.) If that is the case, I might hand over the reins temporarily to my ingenius partner Gui… or just pop in myself and give you a quick ‘hi, hello… how you do?’ kinda thing.

Anyways… to wrap up. Lots of things happening in next few weeks, website launch, logo designs, launch of the webcomic. Do you feel he excitement in the air? I do!! Wait… that might just be dust.

Till next time Qwixoticans!!

There’s always something about a man Uniform… (no homo)

This post comes after some hours of battling it out with the fluctuating electricity and internet connection from where I am right now… however I have beatdown the forces that desire to keep me away from my fans!! Or… rather, the fans of QWIXOTIC.

I’ve got a gem of a surprise today. Keeping with my promise of being able to SHOW everyone some of the recent progress with the QWIXOTIC Web Comic, I give you the finalized henchmen of the Qwixie Universe… an S.O.S. Officer!

You may remember Vince’s initial sketch of an SOS officer a few months ago, but since then he’s heeded our feedback, thrown some bits of his own ideas into the mix… and lo, here he is.

This truly reflects what we intend for the SOS to be, henchmen, but not nameless or faceless. We want these guys to have their own stories, their own reasons for doing The Server’s bidding. We don’t want them to just be hero fodder during fight scenes.

This drawing reflects that quality because on top of looking very official and bad-ass, you can see the man more in the uniform, instead of just being a generic bad guy. The bulky-ness of the dude’s frame shows his intimidation factor, also the fact that despite his eyes being covered, you can still see his expression, and will be able to throughout the Web Comic as well. The SOS soldiers will vary in size, shape and look, but their uniform will remain the same. So with that in mind, it’s great to see that Vince was able to retain the man under the uniform instead of having it overwhelm him.

Let me know what you guys think about this dude. And come back next week for the ultimate treat on this BLOG since it’s inception. That’s right we’ll get to see someone we haven’t seen in an all out sketch in a long while. Make sure you return… or I’ll sic her on you!
